Course Description

Target Audience: K-12 parents, teachers, and administrators; lifelong learners

Format: Asynchronous online and self-paced

Time Commitment: 3-3.5 hours/lesson

Duration: 365 days (12 months) of access 

This course is designed to help anyone learn and teach with a 21st-century approach to knowledge and teaching. We hope the ideas will help you as a person and help you learn new teaching ideas to share with learners. The course includes a focus on data literacy, and shares content knowledge and teaching ideas for that area. If you are having thoughts of "I don’t know a lot about data" or "That sounds very maths-ey and I don’t like maths," don't worry -- this course is designed to be accessible to you. Whether you are a kindergarten teacher, a high school history or maths teacher, an administrator or parent, or someone just curious about data, there will be ideas for you. By taking this course, you are agreeing to participate in studies that we may conduct as part of our ongoing research into online learning.

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, learners will:

  1. understand the limitless learning potential of all students and have ways to communicate this information to students;
  2. understand the nature of our data-filled world and the meaning of data science;
  3. understand the importance of data literacy for all students;
  4. understand data analysis tools and different ways to analyze and visualize data;
  5. understand the cross-curricular nature of data literacy and learning; and
  6. develop exciting data-filled lessons for all students.

 

Course Credentials

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive 2 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), equivalent to 20 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). In an effort to support participants with providing documentation of the 2 CEUs/20 PDHs associated with this course, we provide a Professional Learning Record along with a Statement of Accomplishment. You can view a sample Professional Learning Record and sample Statement of Accomplishment, and use these samples to check with or seek advance approval from your school district. Across Stanford, we only provide a Record of Completion for these types of courses, which is an official document but not a Transcript. As a note of clarification, a Transcript is documentation of courses that build toward a Stanford degree.

Jo Boaler

Nominelli-Olivier Professor of Education, Co-Director of youcubed

Jo Boaler is the Nomellini-Olivier Professor of Education at Stanford and the Co-Director of youcubed at Stanford Graduate School of Education. Her former roles have included being the Marie Curie Professor of Mathematics Education in England and a maths teacher in London comprehensive schools.

She is the author of numerous articles and books as well as several online courses, a White House presenter, and a co-leader of a K-12 data science initiative. The BBC has named her one of the eight people “changing the face of education.”
